Bursitis

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that reduces friction around a joint. Bursitis is when one becomes irritated and inflamed — most often at the hip, shoulder, knee or elbow — causing local pain that’s worse with movement or pressure on the area.

It’s usually a symptom of how an area is being loaded, rather than a problem that appears out of nowhere.

Often it isn’t where it hurts

A bursa gets irritated when the structures around it overload or rub against it — often because of a movement or control issue nearby. A hip that isn’t moving well, a shoulder blade that isn’t controlling the joint, or a repetitive load can all set it off. That’s why settling the bursa alone often isn’t enough — the cause keeps re-irritating it. We assess the whole area to find what’s actually driving it.

How we treat it

Treatment calms the irritated bursa and the tissues around it, then addresses the movement, control and loading cause so it settles for good.

We’ll also guide activity and loading so you can stay active without flaring it.

Common questions

How long does bursitis take to settle?

It varies with the joint and the cause, but most cases settle well once the irritation and the underlying loading are addressed.

Should I rest or keep moving?

Usually a balance — we’ll guide what to modify and what to keep doing, since total rest often isn’t the answer.

Will it keep coming back?

Not if we address the movement or loading cause, rather than just the symptom.

Is it serious?

Most bursitis is very treatable. We’ll assess properly and tell you honestly if anything needs onward referral.
