Arthritis & osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the wear-related change that happens in joints over time — most often the hips, knees, hands and spine — bringing pain, stiffness and a feeling that the joint just does not move like it used to. It is very common, and it does not mean you have to stop doing the things you enjoy.

We can’t reverse the changes in the joint, but we can help you manage the pain and stiffness, and keep the joint and the muscles around it moving well.

The whole-body view

When a joint is sore it is natural to move it less — but that often makes stiffness and weakness worse, and loads the joints either side. Keeping the joint moving, easing the surrounding muscle tension and supporting the right kind of activity is a big part of managing osteoarthritis well. We work as an adjunct to exercise and your GP’s care, not a replacement for it.

How we help

Treatment focuses on easing pain and stiffness with gentle hands-on work, keeping the joint and surrounding muscles moving, and supporting a sensible activity and strength plan so you stay capable.

We are honest about what osteopathy can and can’t do for arthritis — it is about managing symptoms and keeping you moving, alongside the core treatments your GP recommends.

Common questions

Can osteopathy cure arthritis?

No — nothing can reverse osteoarthritis. But we can help manage the pain and stiffness and keep you moving, as an adjunct to exercise and your GP’s care.

Should I rest a painful arthritic joint?

Usually the opposite — gentle, appropriate movement tends to help more than rest. We’ll guide what’s right for you.

Will it help my hip or knee arthritis?

We can help manage the pain and keep the joint and surrounding muscles moving, alongside the exercise and core care recommended for osteoarthritis.

Do I need to see my GP too?

Yes — we work alongside your GP’s care for arthritis, not instead of it.
