Jaw & TMJ pain

Jaw pain, clicking, tightness or difficulty opening often comes from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles around it. It can cause facial pain, headaches and ear-area discomfort, and it frequently overlaps with neck tension and teeth-grinding.

We see a lot of jaw and TMJ cases, including referrals from dentists, where the bite isn’t the whole story.

Often it isn’t where it hurts

The jaw doesn’t work in isolation — it’s closely linked to the neck and the muscles of the head and face. Clenching, grinding, stress and a stiff upper neck all load the TMJ. That’s why jaw pain often improves when the neck and surrounding muscles are treated alongside the joint itself.

How we treat it

Treatment includes hands-on work to the jaw muscles (including inside the mouth where appropriate), the neck and upper back, plus advice on the habits — clenching, posture, stress — that keep it going.

We’re happy to work alongside your dentist where that’s relevant.

Common questions

Can osteopathy help TMJ or jaw pain?

Yes — by treating the jaw muscles and joint and the neck tension that often drives them, alongside the habits that aggravate it.

Do you work with dentist referrals?

Yes. We often see patients referred by dentists where the jaw pain isn’t fully explained by the teeth or bite.

Why does my jaw click or lock?

Often the joint and its muscles aren’t moving in a balanced way. We assess this and treat what’s driving it.

Is treatment uncomfortable?

Jaw work can feel tender as tight muscles release, but we always work within your comfort and explain what we’re doing.
