Osteopathic whole-body assessment at London Osteopath, Waterloo SE1

A whole-body approach to pain and movement

Osteopathy is a hands-on way of diagnosing and treating pain and movement problems. Instead of focusing only on where it hurts, we look at how your whole body moves and loads — because persistent pain almost always has a root cause somewhere other than the painful spot.

We assess you standing, moving and loading, find where the chain broke down, restore the movement that’s been lost, and explain what we find every step of the way.

Osteopathy: common questions

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on, whole-body approach to diagnosing and treating pain and movement problems. Rather than focusing only on where it hurts, an osteopath looks at how your whole body moves and loads to find what’s actually driving the problem.

What can osteopathy help with?

Persistent back and neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries, jaw (TMJ) pain, headaches linked to the neck, and the postural strain that builds up from desk work — particularly pain that hasn’t responded to standard treatment.

Is osteopathy painful?

Treatment shouldn’t be painful. Some hands-on techniques feel firm, and it’s normal to feel a little sore for a day or two afterwards. We always work within what’s comfortable for you and explain what we’re doing as we go.

Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?

No. You can book directly. If we think another professional is better placed to help you, we’ll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction.

What should I wear or bring?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. It helps to bring any relevant scan results or letters, but they’re not essential.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what’s going on and how long it’s been there. After your first assessment we’ll give you an honest, realistic idea — the goal is for you to need us less over time, not more.

Are your osteopaths registered?

Yes. All our osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), which is a legal requirement to practise in the UK.

How is osteopathy different from physiotherapy or chiropractic?

There’s overlap, but osteopathy takes a whole-body view and combines hands-on treatment with movement and education. Our focus is finding and treating the root cause — then giving you the tools to keep the change.
